Thanet Athletics Club

35 athletes from Thanet Athletics Club travelled to Canterbury last week, as reported previously, for the Invicta East Kent AC July Open meeting.  On a highly successful night, three club athletes achieved national standards for their events and 19 achieved top three finishes.

Tamara Anderson (U13, left above) finished second in both her events behind Rhiannon Wallwork of Invicta East Kent, but her 13.8 secs 100m gave her the highest national Grade 1 and her 4.40m long jump national Grade 2.  Twin sister Georgina (U13) won her 200m heat in 28.0 secs to also achieve national Grade 1 for the event.

Chantelle Bailey (U13) finished third in her 100m heat in 14.9 secs to gain national Grade 4; while James Mileham (U13), not a club member and competing as an unattached athlete, achieved national Grade 3 with his 8.02m shot putt.

In the younger age groups, George Pittock (U9) won his 75m heat ahead of team-mates Maisie Macartney (U9) and Jacob Brown (U9); while Oliver Davies (U9), Harry Lutz (U10), Daniel Kelly (U10), Hannah Denny (U11) and Tanaka Alexander (U11) all achieved top three finishes in later heats of the same event.

Jacob Brown (U9) won his 400m heat, while Maisie Macartney (U9), Oliver Davies (U9) and Harry Lutz (U10) also achieved top three finishes.

Hannah Denny (U11) won her 800m heat and was third in the long jump; while Paul Ayers (U20) was second in the shot putt.

“What a night!” said club coach David Debling.  “Many of our athletes were here for their first competition on the track; they all did very well and they saw Tamara and Georgina establish themselves among the very best in England in their age group.  What great inspiration and what fantastic role models”.
