Report, results and photographs from our first open track and field meeting
Thanet Athletics Club held its first open track and field meeting at The Marlowe Academy on Saturday and it was a great success with athletes representing clubs from across Kent enjoying the full range of track and field events across the whole age range.
The event was planned and organised by Thanet Athletics Club Head Coach Kim Weaving and Marlowe Academy Athletics Development Officer James Bridge. “What a fantastic day!” said Kim. “Just what we had hoped for. We wanted to start fairly low-key, with a manageable event that we could learn from, but at the same time with a good level of competition. That is exactly what we had and I am so pleased”.
On the track, Hannah Denny (Thanet AC) won the Under 11 75m and 600m ahead of Laura Parrish (Invicta East Kent AC) in both races. Leah Henniker (Thanet AC) made a very impressive debut on the track, finishing second in the Under 11 150m, third in the 75m and fourth in the 600m. Alice Fox (Thanet AC) secured a sprint double with victory in the Under 13 100m and 200m, with Chantelle Bailey (Thanet AC) second in both races.
For the boys, Josh Richards (Invicta East Kent AC) won the Under 11 75m and 600m, but was beaten into second place in the 75m by unattached athlete Jack Seery. Dan Adams (unattached) won the 800m and 1500m in the Under 13 age group.
Hannah Denny (Thanet AC) was also successful in the field, winning the Under 11 long jump ahead of Katie Burton (Invicta East Kent AC). Jack Shale (Thanet AC) won the boys long jump in the same age group ahead of Jack Seery. There was a family double with Amy Clayton (Thanet AC) winning the Under 13 girls long jump and her sister Sophie Clayton (Thanet AC) also winning the Under 15 girls long jump.
Amber Guyatt (Ashford AC) won the Under 13 girls javelin and the high jump; and Joseph Griffiths (Thanet AC) and James Mileham (Thanet AC) won the Under 11 and Under 13 boys javelin with impressive throws of 16.17 and 28.97m respectively.
Stefan Humphrys (unattached) had a good day, winning the Under 17 boys javelin and the pole vault with an excellent 2.20m. Club throws coach Leon Weaving pulled on a Thanet AC vest for the first time, and clearly enjoyed himself winning the Senior Men’s high jump, discus, hammer and shot putt.
The event winners are listed below and full results can also be downloaded below and from the Documents page. Thanet Athletics Club would like to thank Mick Rendell, Tony Bailey, parent volunteers and others who helped to make the first open track and field meeting such a success.
