Club supports National School Sport Week
Thanet Athletics Club coaches Phil Pittock and Janet Clayton supported National School Sport Week in Thanet this week.
Phil and Janet coached 100 Year 3 children from Northdown, Drapers Mills and Holy Trinity & St John’s primary schools at an event organized by Sports Coach Lisa Sparkes at Northdown. The children worked in groups on a quick rotation, and learned the techniques of standing long jump and sprinting before taking part in sprint relay races.
Phil and Janet also supported a Sportshall Athletics Festival at King Ethelbert School organized by School Sport Co-ordinator Richard McHugh. 60 Year 5 and Year 6 children from Birchington, St Nicholas-at-Wade and St Saviour’s primary schools took part in an exciting afternoon of competitive athletics. Events included standing long jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, foam javelin, hurdles and sprint relay races. St Nicholas-at-Wade Primary School were the winners of the competition, with St Saviour’s second and Birchington third, and a great time was had by all.
“It is great to see community clubs supporting events such as this” said Richard. “We can benefit from their time and expertise and it helps the children to make the link between school sport and club sport”.
