Sound Start to KYAL Season

KYAL Norman Park, Bromley – 8th May 2016

16 athletes from Thanet Athletics Club travelled to Bromley on Sunday for the first Division 2 match of the Kent Young Athletes League. It was a baking hot day and some athletes struggled with the heat but still went on to deliver excellent performances.

The U15 Boys performed particularly well finishing 1st in almost all of their events. Connor Neal was 1st in the A String 100m with a PB of 12.3s and 1st in the Long Jump with a new PB of 5.08m. Also in the 100m was William Jennings who finished with a PB of 13.1s and Aston Fredericks with 13.3s, also a PB. Ned Naisbitt won the Javelin with a throw of 28.56m which was just short of his PB, and was 2nd in the Discus with 16.44m. Brothers Jack and George Seery ran the 80m Hurdles with Jack coming in 1st with a PB of 14.2s very closely followed by George with 14.5s. The U15 Boys ran an excellent 4 x 100m relay in a new club record time of 51.6s and finished 1st overall with 146 points.

Competing for the U15 Girls, Erin Moses had an excellent day finishing 1st in all of her events – 100m with 13.6s, 300m with a PB of 44.5s and 75m Hurdles with 12.3s. As did Emily Russell who ran the 100m in a PB of 13.7s and the 75mH in a PB of 12.9s. Newcomer India Wayman finished 6th in the 1500m with a time of 6m 12.6s. Considering the U15 Girls had no entrants in any of the throw events they did well to achieve 65 points overall and finish 5th.

The U13 Boys team consisted of only two entrants – newcomer Kofi Wayman and Demot O’Brien. Wayman finished 1st in the Shotput with a PB of 5.13m and 1st in Javelin with 13.54m which was an excellent achievement at his first competition. O’Brien finished 4th in the 1500m with a new PB of 5m 44.1s and also ran a PB and 2nd place in the 75m Hurdles with 17.1s. The boys earned 43 points and finished 5th overall.

The U13 Girls was also a small team of three entrants – new to KYAL were Libby Pritchard and Mabel Naisbitt and also Jessica Francis who had competed last year. Pritchard jumped a PB of 3.43m in Long Jump to finish in 4th place, Naisbitt was 3rd in the B String heat of the 75m with 12.9s and Francis ran the 1200m for the first time, finishing in 5m 30.1s. The girls clocked up 54 points and finished 6th overall.

The club finished 4th overall at the end of the first match with a combined total of 333 points.

Any year 6, 7, 8 or 9 boys or girls who are interested in joining the club and competing at future events should visit thanetac.co.uk for more information or come along to a training session at the Royal Harbour Academy from 6pm – 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings to speak to one of the coaches.
