Thanet AC In ‘Medal Heaven’ at County Championships

March 23, 2016

Thanet Athletics Club eclipsed their best ever medal tally at the County Indoor Championships by taking away 10 medals over the two day event consisting

of 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Diana Adegoke, ranked no.10 in the UK, took gold in the U20 age group with a distance of 5m48. This was a little below her best so far this year, but considering that she was unwell it was another fantastic achievement to take her into the outdoor season with a lot of confidence. Diana also made the final of the 60m with a time of 8.01s in her heat to then run 8.07s in the final to place just out of the medals here too.

Erin Moses kept up the promise of a breakthrough in 2016 by taking her first ever County title with gold in the U15 60m hurdles race with a huge personal best of 9.59s to now rank her 34th in the country. Erin also came 4th in the 200m final recording 28.27s after getting through her heats in a time of 28.20s.

Our third gold medal came from Danny Campion in the Senior Men T42 section in the 60m race recording a time of 11.38s. This was a huge personal best for Danny and ranks him 2nd in the UK.

Our first silver medallist was the promising young talent Emily Russell in the U15 200m race. Emily won her heat in a time of 27.98s to then progress to the final where she ran another personal best of 27.54s. This now ranks Emily 70th in the country and she is still in her first year of 2 in this age group.

Oliver Cooper scooped 2 medals this weekend. First of all he achieved a silver medal in the U20 long jump with a seasons best of 5m03 before also adding a bronze medal in the pole vault with a height of 2m50. Oliver also recorded seasons bests in the 60m with a time of 7.82s, the 200m with a time of 25.70s, a jump of 10m65 in the triple jump and a personal best in the shot putt with 10m02.

Our third silver medallist was Emily Giardina in the U17 shot putt with a distance of 7m44. This was Emily’s first ever County medal and a very well deserved one too. Emily also recorded a massive personal best in the 60m with a time of 9.11s and another personal best of 4m22 in the long jump.

Connor Neal took a treble bronze medal haul in the 60m with a huge personal best time of 7.94s, the 200m with a 2 second personal best time of 25.40s and the long jump with a third personal best performance of 4m84.

We also had 5 other athletes competing at the championships. Lewis Parsons recorded 2 personal bests in the 60m with a time of 7.60s and the 200m with a time of 24.70s. Tom Hughes came away with a personal best in the 60m with a time of 8.13s. Adam Wall registered a massive personal best with a time of 8.16s. Abigail Sayer came away with a personal best in the 60m hurdles in a time of 10.50s and over a second personal best in the 200m in a time of 30.12s. Chloe Williams threw the shot in the U17 age group with a distance of 6m13.

Linda Hardy, one of Thanet AC’s coaches that was there at the weekend, said “It was an amazing weekend with so many good performances. Everybody has worked so hard over the winter and this was such a brilliant way to finish off the indoor season to give them a boost to go and now do themselves proud outdoors.”
